READING SCHOOL is a Youth Development Initiative of LIGHTWORLD, a youth and advocacy organisation since 2008. It is a Not for Profit, Non Governmental, Non Political Organisation. With core interest in Human Capital Development for Nigerian Youths. We are involved in Human Capital Development, Cultural Integration cum Peace Advocacy, Entrepreneurship Enhancements and Good Governance Initiatives. We have established book clubs in institutions and conduct LIGHT YOUR WORLD Summit for secondary school students in the country. We also provide counselling and helped secondary school and tertiary students, helping them with vital information to achieving their life goals. Problem Statement: With 98% failures in secondary school exams, the issue of the dead reading culture in our society cannot be overlooked. In our society, value for quality education has been regularly on the decline. The problem is that there is no incentive, platform or value reorientation as to make the younger generations’ value knowledge acquisition as a better choice of life. Project Justification The need for this project cannot be over emphasised as there must be a root tree solution approach to stopping the menace of declining reading culture in our society. The ongoing mass failure in Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) and massive disinterest in information gathering of youths must be tackled by redirecting their energy and focus on the noble path of reading and value for quality education. Also, the Yoruba culture is seriously being endangered on the brink of extinction with Yoruba children incapability of reading a complete sentence in Yoruba, this is the reason we are bringing Chief Tunbosun Oladapo to help spur the interest of the younger generation in Yoruba Reading. More similar episodes will still come up to promote the art, tenets and language of the Yoruba rich socio cultural heritage Objectives of READING SCHOOL 1. To create a platform for the authors to read their books therefore enabling the younger generations to learn and be inspired 2. To start a passion for Yoruba readership, an art that is being lost among the youths of today. 3. To share knowledge and promote book clubs across the state and for participating schools to start a renewed book club in their schools which will be monitored by LIGHTWORLD Team Members. 4. For the stakeholders to discuss and proactively proffer solutions to the decaying Reading Culture among Nigeria Youths including the Yoruba Reading Abilities. 5.To start ways of minimising examination malpractices among the youths and in our schools. The Date for this event is September 22, 2011.
